Observations

Longer parts with internal repetition are kept interesting by drum/bass or clean/distorted variation. (See parts 2, 4, 5b-c, 8)

Other parts have a triple structure, starting with an instrumental intro, then a sung verse, then a solo or duett. (See parts 5, 7, 11)

Like some other songs, this song starts with an „A-A-B-A“ structure (parts 2, 3, then 2 again), that justs hints at a beginning verse/chorus structure but then wanders off to completely different sections.

Opinion

This song has one of the few flaws on the ghost reveries album but also one of its greatest moments.

The flaw in my view is the mellotron section (2a-b). Not because I had anything against the mellotron but because in this section it doesn't really fit with the rest of the music. The melody played by the mellotron is a little stiff while the guitar hectically buzzes around it. And soundwise it does not really fit in my ear.

The great section is the „Lost love“-duett (7a-c). The chorus where the „Lost love“ lyrics are sung in two voices against each other and then the long winding duett between keys and guitar sends shivers down my spine every time I hear it.

The outro section (12a-c) also deserves special mention. It contains a tricky heartbeat rhythm that carries through this section. During the subsections the heartbeat fades away slowly while the synthesizer effects come more and more to the foreground.
